Chapter Twelve

Approximately every forty seconds, someone in the Great United States of America has a heart attack. They’re usually old, but not always. Typically physically inactive, but not always. Obese, diabetic, but not always. I am neither old, nor physically inactive. Neither obese nor a diabetic. I drink, but not in excess. I don’t smoke. I exercise. And though it’s not impossible for someone of my age to go down because of a weakened heart, this isn’t the way I saw myself going. Let’s not forget that I don’t exactly have a heart that should, in any way, shape or form, be attacked by something that isn’t a silver coated blade or bullet. And yet, when the beast from the sky shoots toward me, his wings pulled back as he descends, I very much feel like my heart is about to give out. My hand shoots to my chest and my eyes squeeze closed. Behind them, is darkness, dotted with the kind of stars you see when someone knocks you over the head with a frying pan. There’s roaring behind me, and my body moves as a hand pushes against my shoulder. I stumble, but I don’t fall.

Another attack. Another threat coming from the skies. And then something deafening rings through the air. My eyes shoot open and my head spins in the direction the sound came from. What I see is not what I expect to see. Reece has his weapon in his hand, still pointing at the section of sky the beast took up. There’s a hint of smoke where his silver bullet left the barrel of his gun and then silence before the beast hits the ground.

Had it not been for Reece putting a silver bullet through its chest, it’s possible that I would be the next patient in the infirmary – or the next body in the morgue.

I steady my breathing and pull my hand away from my chest. “It just came out of nowhere,” I say, my eyes trained on Reece. He nods and settles his arm around my shoulder, pulling me close. Together we feast our eyes upon the beast. A beast that neither looks beastly nor dangerous. The realization makes me feel like a blasted fool. Something as small as a pigeon shouldn’t have me this on edge. The fact that Reece was the one to take it down, that he didn’t hitch to pull his weapon, at least gives me a little satisfaction. Evidently, I’m not the only one prepared for another attack.

Archer says something and when I look at him, he’s shaking his head. “First a helicopter and then a pigeon,” I say, my words directed to him. He pulls a hand to his lips and covers what looks like a smile. Turning to Reece, I neglect the urge to tell him that there’s nothing funny about what happened. Not in the least.

Reece is on the ground, pushing the pigeon over to his side. From beneath him, he pulls a tiny piece of blood tainted paper.
